Q JOE VERMAAK ASKS: I buy houses and do them up. It is through experience that I have learnt not to compromise on the finishes, as they sell the house. I have some training in interior design but am interested in what you can advise for a modern, contemporary finish on the floor or walls?
A ROD BECK REPLIES: Large, seamless, rectified tiles are an indication of contemporary, modern living. Advances in technology allow for a process where the tiles are cut to ensure that they are all precisely the same size and thus can be butt joined, which creates a seamless look that has only been achievable recently and very much a development that is here to stay, whatever style or look is required.Natural and polished porcelain tiles are preferred to ceramic tiles because they are more durable and more stable size-wise.
Porcelain is produced with more refined clay, fired at a higher temperature and is more aesthetically pleasing. White tiles in a large, rectangular format are still popular for the walls, giving the space a clean look. We also see people enjoying mosaics in metallic finishes, stainless steel, glass or porcelain because computer technology has allowed designers to plan mosaics and achieve a wallpaper effect, without being artists or mathematicians.
