The Official FIFA World Cup 2010 song has been released. Sung by Shakira and featuring freashlyground it’s upbeat, toe tapping, and proclaims This Time for Africa – “Waka Waka”
Freashlyground, a South African Afro-fusion band formed in Cape Town, has mixed traditional African beats mixed with a modern pop rhythm that would get any soccer player, including David Beckham, on their toes. Both Shakira and Freshlyground will perform live at the Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium during the Closing Ceremony before the World Cup Final on July 11.
The up-beat song will be made downloadable through digital retailers the week of May 11 and the video will be released mid-May. It’s also included on the “Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album” which proceeds will benefit African charities including FIFA’s “20 Centers for 2010.” So Shine Shine or Waka Waka as the Swahilis say!
