Places With A Past
Kebble Estate - Unique place in history

A Sir Herbert Baker stone home with chapel and a colourful history
Location
Located in the great scenic beauty of the Eastern Free State some 13km from the town of Clocolan and mid-way between Ficksburg and Ladybrand, Keble is easily reached on tar roads from Johannesburg and Bloemfontein.
Entrance to the estate is via a kilometre long avenue of old oak trees said to have been planted from acorns collected in the Sherwood Forest.
History
Keble was built in the mid 1870s for an Anglican priest, The Reverend Algernon Harcourt-Vernon, and named after Keble College at Oxford University where he studied Divinity.
One of Only Three
It is one of only three grand old homes built in colonial/Victorian style in the Free State – the others being Prynnsberg and Westminster.
Historical Sandstone
Beautiful, cut Free State sandstone, reputedly from the same quarry used for the Union Buildings in Pretoria, has been used in the construction of the main house, the 111-year old chapel, St Michael and All Angels, and the Coach House and other buildings on the property.
Home and buildings
The house and adjacent buildings nestle in a ring of surrounding mountains including the famed Judges Head and has a manicured English garden.
· The large main house has magnificent original woodwork and panelling and comprises a large, so-called music room, which has accommodated a sit-down dinner for 80 people.
·The downstairs includes a separate dining room, a lounge, farmhouse kitchen, bathroom, separate toilet and two large Victorian bedrooms.
· A feature staircase leads upstairs to the main bedroom and bathroom and two other, smaller bedrooms.
