SA's Senior Citizens Celebrated

The Department of Social Development has officially launched the Older Person’s Act, which aims to maintain and protect the status, well-being, safety and rights of older people. It also aims to promote their integration in the community by creating an enabling environment and promoting participation in activities with people of other ages and cultures.
The Act was launched at a fitting time on Nelson Mandela Day – a day where people from around the world join together to serve their communities and work towards a better future.
David Welsh, Development Consultant at the Schonenberg Retirement Village, says, “We fully support the Act and the rights of older people as they, like Madiba, are the parents of our nation and we have much to learn from them”.
Following a recent meeting between the Department of Social Development and members of South African Older Persons Forum, one of the key points to have emerged was the encouragement of elderly people to live active lives rather than frittering away their golden years in front of a television set or in bed.
“Through working with the older people in our Village on a daily basis, we have definitely noticed the difference it makes when they lead active lifestyles and interact with people from different age groups. For instance, we have a wonderful lady living here who goes for a 10km walk and reads her newspaper every day – not bad for a 100 year old! This is a prime example of how active minds and bodies can prolong and add quality to life.
“In addition to taking trips to the nearby gym, shopping centre, golf course, beach and wine estates, many of our residents benefit enormously from their interactions with the broader Schonenberg Estate community, of which our Retirement Village is a part, and some are lucky enough to have their children and grandkids living there too. In addition, we have built facilities onsite such as our new clubhouse equipped with a library, bar, dining areas and more to further encourage our residents to remain active.
“We are firmly behind the government and our senior citizens in the promotion of active ageing, and inter-generational bonding as well as expanding horizons for older people”, concludes the Development Consultant.”
