Bantry Bay’s Ambassador

Think modern and utterly unique – this is the essence of the Ambassador Hotel’s extensive and ongoing upgrade. In the past 18 months, the iconic main hotel’s guest rooms have already achieved a completely new look, and Salt Deli and Salt Vodka Bar have been added to the establishment’s luxury portfolio.
Situated in a private wing, apart from the main hotel, the 29 spacious apartments are currently being fully upgraded. “We have already completed the installation of magnificent travertine tiles in the interiors of all the apartments including the bathrooms as well as the installation of flat-screen plasma televisions,” says Ambassador Resident Manager, Nikki Phillips. “The next phase of the upgrade will include updated soft furnishings”.
The upgrade of all 68-guest rooms in the main hotel was completed last year. Under the direction of renowned interior designer, Francois du Plessis, the chic new décor is sophisticated, yet discreet, in a palette of neutrals that reflect the colours of the surrounding coastline. Clean lines and simple sophistication will also be carried through in the soft furnishings upgrade of the Ambassador Apartments, in a bid to showcase the splendid ocean location.
Enjoying a sizable chunk of the upgrade budget, Salt Deli and Salt Vodka Bar are both enticing additions to the Ambassador Hotel portfolio. Salt Deli opened in time for the peak summer holidays in December last year, and the much anticipated Salt Vodka Bar opens in mid 2010.
Recently appointed General Manager of the Salt brand, Ruan Olivier, says: “There is nothing quite like Salt Deli in the Bantry Bay area. We had space and wanted to extend the success of the Salt Restaurant brand through a less formal space, where guests can pop in any time from early morning until 9pm – for a great cup of coffee or something delicious to eat.” To keep cuisine interesting and ever changing, Salt Restaurant’s award winning chef Jacques de Jager has introduced daily specials for deli diners.
Olivier adds that the idea behind Salt Deli is to serve classic deli fare and great breakfasts – like eggs Benedict and cream cheese and salmon bagels – in a relaxed atmosphere. “However,” he says, “there is a very strong focus on quality. We source the best quality food and ingredients available, and prefer to use South African suppliers.”
Salt Deli’s retail section is already a favourite shopping place for hotel guests and locals alike, with 80% of the products sold being South African and completely unique. Shoppers enjoy a wide selection of olive oils and grape vinegars, salad dressings and preserves. There are also flavoured salts and many other well known deli ranges. Olivier says his aim is to showcase South African niche producers that produce international standard products.
Cutting edge Salt Vodka Bar is located above Salt Deli. Olivier says the bar is a brand new concept. “There isn’t a vodka bar in Cape Town and we felt the concept would perfectly complement the branding of Salt – both are elemental, clean products.” Here guests can relax in the sophisticated lounge and enjoy a choice of 30 premium brand vodkas, served neat or as a colourful cocktail, and accompanied by delectable tapas from Salt Deli.
The walk-in champagne fridge, also has a choice of 30 bubblies – half local, half French – all available by the glass. To complete the hedonistic experience are panoramic views of the moody Atlantic – perfectly reflecting the uncluttered, free flowing essence of the Ambassador Hotel, Salt Restaurant, Deli and Vodka Bar. It just doesn’t get much better.
