Bathroom
Splashing in a small space
If your bathroom is very small or if you want to create a new bathroom in a minute space, you’ll need a solid plan before you do anything. Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager at Tile Africa shares some handy tips to help you make the most of a small bathroom:
Baths
A soak in a bath is a luxury when space is at a premium, but it is possible to fit a bath into a small area. “Nowadays baths are not always rectangular. Look out for a bath that saves space at the foot end. Another space saver is a corner bath, useful in an area where a longer bath would block a doorway,” says van Niekerk.
Showers
“Curved corner or pentagon shower cubicles are miracle space savers for a small space,” she says. Where it is impossible to fit in a separate shower, an all in one bath and shower combination is the answer.
Basins
The trend is towards basins that are part of vanity units. This solution not only covers ugly plumbing pipes, but uses up empty space below a traditional pedestal basin for storage. In a small bathroom, clutter only intensifies the feeling of there not being enough space. A vanity unit with cupboard space allows you to store everything neatly away. “Choose a couple of beautiful feature accessories to have on show.”
Toilets
To save space van Niekerk recommends wall-hung toilets with a concealed flush mechanism. “It gives a streamlined look, and they are very hygienic as the floor beneath them is left clear.”
Accessories
Keep accessories simple in a small space. Mirrors are very useful for reflecting light and make a space feel bigger. “Use shelves over basins, baths and in showers to keep items such as shampoo and shower gel at hand,” adds van Niekerk. She recommends towel rails that come in double versions, and a ring for a hand towel next to a basin.
