Ask the Expert

Inner Circle: Ashleigh Gilmour

What was your favourite interior design job of all time and why? I have had the wonderful opportunity of working on a wide range of top-end domestic and commercial projects. My favourites would be a luxurious hotel we are currently working on in the Seychelles, a beach home in Hermanus and a Clifton architectural masterpiece.

What are the latest trends in fabric, colour, furniture and special configures? I love the way cutting edge furniture designers are using innovative materials to highlight the simplicity in their design. The focus becomes the material used, which accentuates its form. Fabrics are now taking on large-scale proportions in daring explosions of blends and vibrant colours. There seems to be a move towards contrasting hi-tech materials with strong accent colours and raw, natural materials.

Are you interested in Green interior design? What is the standard of Green materials available in SA? As a designer I am aware of my responsibility to think Green and it is fast influencing my design process. Building homes has now become more about the materials used, energy-efficient construction methods and the clever use of recycled materials. The good news is that sustainability techniques can be easily employed in most homes by using simple techniques, like utilising natural light, fewer electrical lights, solar panels, water catchment and, of course, Green materials. Currently there are Green fabrics on the market that we have been specifying.

Which international designer do you most admire and why? I admire and draw most of my inspiration from international designers like Patricia Urquiola, Vincenzo de Cotiis and Christian Liaigre.

With the property market in the doldrums, have you found that people have been redesigning their interiors instead of moving? If one had to focus on one room to design in order to increase a house’s value, which room would you suggest? Fittings and fixtures are important and the good use of space increases a house’s value. My focus would always be to create an inviting open-plan living environment.
